In its conventional form a photographic essay consists of a narrative photographic sequence accompanied by scant text. To emphasize the potential of this narrative form Eugene Smith is quoted as saying: “My station in life is to capture the action of life, the life of the world, its humor and its tragedies, in other words, life as it really is.”
When I photograph poverty it is my aim to capture anguish in the eyes; if I photograph the sugarcane harvesters living as slaves y hope that the humanity and desperation shine through in the pictures. In a photograph of a happy person I search for an expression of the purest joy and not a conventional smile aimed at pleasing the camera. Even if it is a horse’s smile.
