Eyes of the World Foundation is a non-profit organisation that helps visually impaired people without financial resources in poor countries to receive high-quality ophthalmic care through their local health services and to create the necessary conditions to reduce the incidence of eye diseases in these countries. It also seeks to raise awareness in our society of the deficiencies in basic healthcare suffered by these countries.
Cataract surgery is one of the most cost-effective surgical procedures carried out by the Foundation Eyes of the World. Eighty villagers were successfully operated in the Bolivian city of Tarija for cataract removal. Now, these villagers are no more dependent on any one to lead their daily life. This is the beginning of the project LUZES.
There are 285 million people in the world with serious visual deficiencies, of which 39 million are blind. Restoring people’s vision is the first step to helping them see a future in their lives. It is also another way of fighting poverty: looking it in the eyes.
