China (2016)

Slideshow

The planet's most populous country and second largest by land mass. Its civilization is one of the world's oldest, and it has maintained an advanced economy for two millennia.

China is packed with diverse sights - stretching from the snowy wildernesses of the north to the Gobi Desert to the lush sub-tropical south.

Some of the pictures have been taken in the province of Yunnan, noted for a very high level of ethnic diversity after Xinjiang, which has forty-seven minorities. Among the country's 56 recognised ethnic groups, twenty-five are found here.

In recent trips I have explored Shangri-La and and its surroundings, mingling with Tibetans who inhabit this area, as well as the beautiful provinces of Guizhou and Guangxi. My work is focused especially on the Miao ethnic minority.

Not only is enormous and highly diverse, but most importantly, it's rapidly changing. China's constitution states that The People's Republic of China "is a socialist state under the people's democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants," and that the state organs "apply the principle of democratic centralism".

So now is an exciting time to go.
