Lchekutis, Maasai Child Shepherds (2018)

The Maasai community comprises approximately one and a half million people. The child shepherds work all day they have no opportunity to go to school and they feed exclusively on milk and tea. Therefore they cannot write and read (in our culture they would be called "illiterates") with a high risk of being socially excluded and with a considerable level of malnutrition. To survive, they basically feed on milk or its derivatives and, very exceptionally, improve their diet with goat meat and animal blood.

For these reasons the "Lchekuti" or child shepherd do not go to school. Their fate is to remain forever isolated across the vast Maasai territory, lost in the bush if urgent measures are not applied to get them into school. ONG's like Africa Digna work to make a change.
